Tradition.
Jack Nicklaus, Class of 1957.
Before 18 major championships, before the green jackets and the claret jugs, before he became the greatest golfer to ever play the game — Jack Nicklaus was a Golden Bear. He learned the game on the fairways of Scioto Country Club and wore the black and gold at Upper Arlington High School, helping lead the program to a state championship in 1956 alongside co-captain Jon Blyth under coach Bill Thomas.
His nickname — the Golden Bear — is the same one our program has carried for generations. The connection is no accident. The standard he set as a teenager in Upper Arlington is the standard every player who pulls on the UA bag is measured against.
In 2017, Nicklaus was the first and only inductee into the inaugural class of the Upper Arlington Athletic Hall of Fame.
